Welcoming the World to OCC

It feels like a meeting of the United Nations. OCC students from Peru, Kenya, Burma, Ethiopia and Venezuela are sharing lunch in the newly renovated International Student Services office. “This is a place where students feel comfortable coming and asking questions,” said Meghan Peryea who oversees the office.

Peryea’s office serves students who are here on visas from 16 countries. Canada and China have more representatives in the student population than any other foreign nation. The student’s home away from home, the International Student Services office, is located in room 202 of the Coulter Library building. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Peryea is also the adviser for the International Student Club which meets twice a semester. “We do cultural bridge presentation. A student or a small group can present on their home country. They’ll do a power point, show pictures, sometimes bring in food or international dress or do a dance.” The next International Student Club meeting is Wednesday, March 1 at 11:30 a.m. in room 272 of Mawhinney Hall. “The meetings are open to everyone. We want other students to be exposed to our international students and their rich heritage.”
