Any future college student will at one point in their college application process hear about the stigmas of community colleges. The stigmas include, “They offer no opportunities, have low-quality classes, and are just plain boring.” It’s tough to understand these rumors and to figure out what’s true or false about community colleges. I’m here to debunk some of the myths that will come up during your college application process.

Myth: Community Colleges Have Nothing to Do

This is by far the most popular myth of community colleges. At OCC there are many activities available to students including a student lounge with a pool table, video games, ping pong, etc., which is by far the most popular hangout spot on campus. Starbucks and Peet’s Cafe are perfect spots for students to relax and refresh in-between classes, and there are plenty of events that the school organizes which revolve around the seasons and holidays. Joining clubs is another great option to become further involved on campus. There are many at OCC to choose from, including drama, table tennis, ASL, dance, and many more. Any student who attends OCC can start a club based on their interests and hobbies. On top of this, OCC offers on-campus housing for students. This gives students the dorm experience without having to pay the cost of a four-year college.

Myth: Lower Quality of Academics

This super common myth is ridiculous, but one that many people believe. Not only does OCC offer the same level of schooling as the first two years at any other school, it also has some of the most wonderful staff and professors that are dedicated to their students. I can say this with great confidence as I have had nothing but helpful professors during my time at this school. OCC offers its students many academic degrees to choose from, as well as outstanding sports teams and a nursing program.
