OCC Philosophy Professor Pat Kenny will always remember January 18, 2018. It was the day he became an American citizen. “It was the happiest room I’ve ever been in. There were people from all over the world. Everyone was smiling including me. I had my family with me. It was great.”
Kenny is a native of Galway, Ireland who came to the United States in 2001 and enrolled in the University of Rochester. While pursuing his doctoral degree in Philosophy he began dating a nursing student at SUNY Brockport. They would get married and today are the proud parents of twin 10-year-old boys.
Kenny began teaching at OCC while he was taking classes at the University Of Rochester and became a full-time professor here in 2008. During his time on campus he’s felt a strong connection to the students he works with. “I love it here. I’m a first generation college student and I encounter a lot of students like myself. I have a bond with international students too.”
As for the subject he teaches, Kenny believes we could all use a little philosophy in our lives. “It’s not like the problems of the world are the result of too much thinking. There should definitely be more critical thinking in the world.”
Congratulations to Philosophy Professor Pat Kenny, our newest U.S. citizen!
