  • Major at OCC: Liberal Arts & Sciences – General Studies

Alex Waelder had a short list of priorities when he considered what would come after high school. “I wanted to go to college and I wanted to play lacrosse. Coming here made sense. OCC was the perfect fit.”

Waelder entered OCC as a General Studies major. His two years on the lacrosse team included an undefeated national championship season in 2015 and a disappointing loss in the national championship game in 2016. “It was probably the saddest day of my life. We picked the wrong day to have a bad game.”

During his freshman year on campus Men’s Lacrosse Head Coach Chuck Wilbur asked Waelder if he would give tours to prospective student-athletes. Waelder did so well he was encouraged to become a Student Ambassador and give tours to all prospective students. “When new students come to campus we are the first people they meet. It’s cool to set the tone for their visit.” Waelder is now a Senior Ambassador, training new Student Ambassadors as they come on board. “I use my experience to put into other people’s tours. It’s fun to have a creative role in what’s going to happen.”

Waelder will graduate in December 2016. His plan is to take a semester off and transfer to Syracuse University for the fall 2017 semester where he will major in Sports Management. The foundation he built for himself here at OCC will help him as he pursues his bachelor’s degree. “My first year academically wasn’t as good as I would have hoped. I have higher standards now and I’m where I want to be.”
