The Onondaga County Legislature paid tribute to Donald Mawhinney Tuesday, July 5 during its monthly meeting. Mawhinney received a Gold Seal resolution in honor of the 55 years he served on Onondaga Community College’s Board of Trustees.
County Legislature Floor Leader Patrick M. Kilmartin (R-Syracuse) sponsored and presented the resolution. Kilmartin’s legislative district includes the OCC campus. He read the resolution in its entirety and congratulated Mawhinney on his exemplary service to the community and the College.
Mawhinney was given the opportunity to speak to legislators and meeting attendees. He served in the same chambers from 1958 to 1965 as a member of the legislature which was then known as the Onondaga County Board of Supervisors. “This room was like a second home to me. I spent a lot of time in these chambers. To have the chance to serve the people of Onondaga County with your permission and your encouragement has been a tremendous honor.” Upon concluding his remarks, Mawhinney received a standing ovation from the lawmakers.
In June Mawhinney attended his final meeting as a member of OCC’s Board of Trustees at which he was honored with Trustee Emeritus status. In 1961 Mawhinney was appointed a founding trustee one year before the College opened its doors to students in Midtown Plaza.
